This innovative steering arrangement was a key part of our 2005 Ultimate Speed entry:

Our 2005 tiller bar steering operated very

effectively without the need for cables!
This steering linkage in our 2005 Ultimate Speed racer was very effective at eliminating the need for steering cables.  It worked well but it made installation of a drag brake somewhat of a challenge because the tiller bar had to extend to the front axle on the floorboard. Consequently we used two plungers on either side of the tiller bar to operate the brake and this design complicated the operation because the two plungers tended to twist and bind as the brake was applied.

One idea I have to improve this would be to mount the tiller bar at the top of the shell and fasten the steering shaft to the top of the body.  That would eliminate the need for the steering shaft to be between the driver's legs and improve driving comfort and safety -- especially in the event of a crash. Using this design, only one plunger brake would work just fine as it would not need to straddle the tiller bar.
